Nobutaka Aozaki Smiley Bag Portrait

R. House (301 W 29th St)

April 12, 6-8pm

Nobutaka Aozaki is a New York-based artist whose works often dealt with everyday interaction between people. For this participatory performance, Aozaki invites the public to sit for portraits that he draws on the smiley faces of take-out bags. These take-out bags, with a smiley face and ‘’Have A Nice Day’’ slogan on them, illustrate how inviting and widespread the fast food industry has become in the U.S. During the performance, Aozaki always chats with the participants about their day, life and what brings them to participate in the performance, which is also a good way to get feedback about the project as well as the artist’s performance from general audience. Aozaki performed his Smiley Bag Portrait at a food hall in Baltimore rather than during the opening reception of the Social Ingredients exhibition in order to truly connect art with everyday life.
